Alpaca Walking Near Petersfield: A First-Timer's Guide

12 August 2026

If you live in or around Petersfield, you're used to having the South Downs on your doorstep. What's less well known is that a genuinely different countryside experience is only 45 minutes away, on the other side of the county. At Itchen Valley Country Park near Southampton, Hensting Alpacas run guided walks where visitors lead their own halter-trained alpaca rather than just watching from behind a fence. Here's what to know before you book.

Why drive out from Petersfield for this?

Petersfield has no shortage of walking routes, but an alpaca walk isn't really about the scenery, it's about the animal. Alpacas are gentle, inquisitive and, once you're holding the lead, surprisingly companionable walking partners. It's the kind of activity that works equally well as a weekend outing with the family, a birthday treat, or simply something different to do with a free Saturday that doesn't involve retracing the same Downs footpaths.

What to expect when you arrive

Walks run for around two hours and start with an introduction to your alpaca and a briefing from one of our experienced handlers, who stays with the group throughout. You'll then set off on a relaxed circuit of the park's fields and paths. There's no rushing involved, alpacas set their own gentle pace, and most of the two hours is simply spent enjoying the walk and getting to know your animal. Full details and booking for the Petersfield route are on our event page.

Who it suits

Pretty much everyone. Children between 3 and 12 share a lead rope with an adult, those aged 12 to 16 can hold their own lead with an adult nearby, and anyone over 16 walks independently. We also run accessible walks every Wednesday from April to October, with carers going free. It's a genuinely flexible day out for grandparents, toddlers and everyone in between.

What to wear and bring

This is farmland, not a manicured park, so sturdy shoes or wellies are worth it, especially after Hampshire rain. A waterproof jacket is sensible for anything other than a clear forecast, since the walk goes ahead rain or shine. Beyond that, just bring a camera, your alpaca will be far more photogenic than expected.

Prices and how to book

Walks start from £32 per person, with family packages from £92 and baby alpaca walks from £54 when available. An additional walker can be added for £18, and £4.50 rescheduling insurance is available if the weather looks uncertain on your chosen date. Gift vouchers are also available for anyone booking on someone else's behalf. As a family-run, BAS-registered business with 16 years behind us, we've got the experience to make first-timers feel comfortable fast. Call 0333 050 4012 or book online to find a date that suits.
